No temperature, duration or weekly frequency for cold plunging has been established as a standard dose by any medical body, and reviewers of this literature describe the health effects as still under debate. Where an answer below gives a number, it describes common practice — what plungers typically do — and not a medically established dose. How cold should a cold plunge be?

Common practice, not an established dose: most people plunge between 50°F and 59°F (10–15°C), and beginners usually start around 59°F (15°C) before working colder over time. No optimal temperature has been established in the research. What is well documented is the risk side — the cold shock response is strongest in roughly this same band, so colder is more hazardous rather than automatically more beneficial. Comfort and consistency matter more than hitting a low number.

How long should you stay in?

Common practice, not an established dose: beginners typically start with 30–60 seconds, and 1–3 minutes is a common range once adapted. No duration has been shown to be optimal, and the widely repeated figure of about 11 minutes per week is a popular-media summary rather than a clinical recommendation. Can I cold plunge every day?

Many people do plunge daily with short sessions. If you're new, build up gradually rather than starting daily. Watch for signs you're overdoing it — lingering cold, poor sleep, or feeling run down — and scale back if needed.

Do I need a chiller, or is ice enough?

Ice works and costs little upfront, but you buy or make ice every session. A chiller has a high upfront cost but keeps water cold automatically with no ice. How much ice do I need for an ice bath?

Ice bath vs cold plunge tub — what's the difference?

They describe the same basic thing — cold-water immersion. In practice, "ice bath" usually means any tub you cool with ice, while "cold plunge tub" often refers to a purpose-built tub, sometimes with an integrated chiller and filtration. The water experience is similar; the difference is convenience and cost.

Can I put a cold plunge in an apartment?

Often yes, but check floor weight and drainage. A filled tub can weigh 700–1,150+ lbs, so heavy chiller tubs are usually kept on a ground floor or reinforced surface. Lighter, upright, or inflatable tubs suit apartments and balconies better. Always confirm a specific model's filled weight and dimensions on the manufacturer's site.

How much space do I need?

It varies widely by model. Upright barrels have a small floor footprint but need height clearance; lie-down chiller tubs can be 6+ feet long. Chiller units also need space and ventilation nearby. How do I keep the water clean?

Chiller tubs often include filtration and sanitation (such as ozone) that circulate and clean the water, so it lasts longer between changes. Ice tubs without filtration need more frequent water changes. Always rinse off before getting in, keep a cover on, and follow the manufacturer's maintenance guidance for your tub.

Are cold plunges safe?

For many healthy adults, brief cold immersion is generally well tolerated, but it isn't risk-free. Cold water triggers the cold shock response — an involuntary gasp, rapid uncontrolled breathing, and a rise in heart rate and blood pressure — which is a documented cause of drowning and cardiac events. If you have heart conditions, high blood pressure, are pregnant, or have any medical concern, talk to a doctor first. Don't plunge alone if you're unsure, and get out if you feel unwell. What are the benefits?

People commonly use cold plunging for post-exercise recovery, feeling more alert, and a sense of resilience from the habit. Published reviews describe the health effects as still contested rather than settled, and results vary between individuals. We avoid medical claims — treat it as a wellness practice, not a treatment.

Should I plunge before or after a workout?

For general recovery, many people plunge after training. If your goal is building muscle size or strength, a controlled trial found that cold immersion immediately after resistance training attenuated some adaptations, so some lifters separate the two by several hours. Does cold plunging help with weight loss?

Cold exposure can slightly increase energy expenditure as your body works to stay warm, but the effect is modest and cold plunging isn't a reliable weight-loss method on its own. Treat any fat-loss benefit as minor and secondary, not a main reason to buy a tub.

What temperature is too cold or dangerous?

There's no single universal number, but water in the 30s°F (around 0–4°C) is very cold and raises the risk of cold shock and rapid heat loss, especially for beginners or longer sessions. Start milder (around 59°F/15°C), keep sessions short, and never chase extreme cold to prove a point. When in doubt, warmer and shorter is safer.

What should I do if I feel dizzy or numb in the water?

Cold plunge vs sauna — which is better?
